Flashback February: Richard Nixon in Prince Edward County

It's been 50 years since the Watergate scandal engulfed American politics, and since Picton's longest serving Mayor died, back in 1974. Few today remember the connection between Harvey J. McFarland and Richard Nixon, or the American politician's 1950's visit to the County. What was behind the Vice-President's secret trip to the Bay of Quinte and his visit with Picton residents, where he made friends with Mayor McFarland, drank and played golf in 1957? Nixon claimed this secret Canadian get-away, a largely unexplored chapter of American Presidential and local history, was just a weekend of sailing and golf with friends. But what were the other possible reasons for his international jaunt?

Dr. Thomas Harrison has been researching the mystery of Nixon's visit, talking to local residents, and uncovering archival documents with surprising results, shedding new light on Nixon's cross-border trip and connecting this distinct episode in County history and politics with the present day. He will read from his forthcoming book, "Searching For Richard Nixon", framed by Nixon's secret Canadian getaway, and share some of his research, in a multimedia presentation that explores the County's connection to one of the most notorious political figures of the 20th century.
